EDELWIES
Description
Opened on 3 July 2015, the Edelwies Natur- und Freizeitpark is set on a total area of approximately 146 hectares in Neukirchen, Bavaria, of which 27 hectares form the active leisure park. The site occupies a terraced hillside position at the foot of the Vorderer Bayerischer Wald, with the Dießenbach stream running through its own gorge and a retention pond adding to the natural character of the grounds. The estate also features a listed historic farmhouse, the Urberhof, dating to 1799. The park's guiding theme is the forest, reflected across the portfolio of rides and attractions. The ride lineup includes three roller coasters (Höllencoaster, Achterbahn "Eulenblitz", and Achterbahn "Marienkäfer"), a Dinoachterbahn, the Superschaukel, Maibaumflieger, Dual Wheel, Standseilbahn "WieLi", Elchreitbahn, Traktorbahn, an interactive boat ride, and a children's chain carousel. Height restrictions, certified by TÜV, apply to most rides. A spray park and water play area extend the offering for younger visitors. The animal section houses meerkats, alpacas, kangaroos, nandus, Patagonian maras, capybaras, goats, and rabbits. The surrounding Naturpark area, accessible to visitors, includes forested slopes, a reservoir, and woodland walking routes. Sustainability is a core element of the park's concept. A 660-metre stretch of the Dießenbach, culverted for roughly a century, has been reopened and restored to a natural course, creating habitat for protected species. The site is heated by a wood chip cogeneration plant using timber sourced from its own forests. Rainwater from sealed surfaces is retained and redirected to adjacent protected wetland areas. Building materials, including granite for dry-stone walls and timber for guest facilities, are sourced locally from the surrounding region. Catering is provided at the Edelwies Restaurant and a food wagon on site.
