Description

African dwarf goats have been part of Bayern-Park for more than 20 years, drawing the curiosity of visitors of all ages. Their origins trace back to equatorial Africa, where they remain widespread today and have been kept as domestic animals by pastoral communities. They likely descend from the bezoar goat and were already kept during the Neolithic period. Weighing around 30 kg, dwarf goats are exceptionally agile climbers. The enclosure at Bayern-Park provides a green area equipped with various climbing structures where the animals move freely. Both males, called Bock, and females, called Geiß, carry horns that grow either straight or twisted. Males are also distinguished by a characteristic beard. Unlike many other species, both sexes remain ready to breed throughout the entire year. The gestation period lasts approximately 150 days, and multiple births are common, with two or three kids born at a time. The young, called Zicklein, are raised within the herd alongside siblings and other kids. Dwarf goats are known for being particularly affectionate and enjoy being petted by visitors.
