Description

Patagonian maras, also known as maras, belong to a subfamily of guinea pigs within the order of rodents. These opportunistic herbivores feed on grasses, branches, and occasional fruit and vegetables, which serve as a particular treat. To extract maximum nutrition from their diet, they practice cecotrophy, the reingestion of their own droppings. Maras are strictly monogamous animals; females are receptive for only about half an hour every three to four months. They can live between 10 and 15 years and weigh between 8 and 15 kg, with females tending to grow slightly heavier than males. The species is currently classified as least concern. At Bayern-Park, the maras share their enclosure with wallabies, located opposite the boat ride through the castle and grotto. Their habitat includes trees, open clearings, shelters, and a dedicated hut. As diurnal animals, they are most active during daylight hours and can often be spotted basking on sunny days. The shyer individuals tend to retreat to the upper section of the enclosure, where they are harder for visitors to spot.
